A lot can be learned about responding to traumatic events. NBC interviewed some first responders about the Texas shooting to learn more from their experience.

As “first responders mobilized to prepare operating rooms, blood banks and other services,” they strove to get materials like whole blood to the site of injury for the victims of violence. The response team banded together quickly, including those from other areas – and they knew that the important thing was to get aid directly to the victims, rather than wait for them to be able to get to a hospital.

“One of the lessons learned from that tragedy [a previous shooting] was the need to transport blood directly to victims instead of waiting for them to arrive at a trauma center.”
