Cumberland EMS has made history by partnering with the Rhode Island Blood Center to launch the state’s first pre-hospital blood transfusion program—bringing life-saving care directly to trauma patients before they even reach the hospital.
At the heart of this innovation is the Delta ICE2L Smart Blood Cooler, ensuring that blood stays safely stored and ready for rapid use in critical emergencies like car accidents, shootings, and severe medical complications. With every minute of delay increasing mortality by 2%, having whole blood available in the field is a game-changer.
Only about 2% of EMS agencies nationwide carry blood on their ambulances. Now, Rhode Island joins that elite group, giving paramedics the tools they need to save lives when seconds matter most.
This breakthrough program is a powerful example of how advanced equipment like the ICE2L is helping EMS teams push the boundaries of emergency care and deliver hospital-level interventions where they’re needed most—on the front lines.
