Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue has approved a major upgrade to its emergency medical capabilities: a Whole Blood Exchange Program that will allow paramedics to administer whole blood before patients even reach the hospital. In partnership with Broward Health Medical Center, the initiative is expected to significantly boost survival rates for patients suffering severe blood loss.

Whole blood delivery in the field has already proven transformative in Broward County, with survivability rates exceeding 81%. Real‑world cases, including recent trauma survivors who received on‑scene transfusions, highlight just how critical those early minutes can be.

A key part of this rollout is the use of Delta ICE, ensuring blood products are safely stored, temperature‑controlled, and ready for rapid deployment. This reliability strengthens FLFR’s ability to provide immediate, life‑saving care when seconds matter most.

The program is set to launch by March.
