Dallas Fire-Rescue has introduced a groundbreaking blood transfusion program aimed at saving lives before patients even reach the hospital. Announced in a recent NBCDFW press conference, the pilot enables EMS teams to deliver on-scene blood transfusions—a major leap in prehospital care.

At the heart of the program is the DDT APRU (Autonomous Portable Refrigeration Unit), a rugged, field-ready cooler that ensures critical blood products remain viable during emergency response. Two EMS supervisor units are now equipped with universal donor blood, warming devices, and transfusion supplies—ready to respond to severe trauma incidents like shootings and crashes.

With support from Parkland Hospital and the American Red Cross, this initiative targets patients who are 30+ minutes from a trauma center, giving them a better chance at survival when every second counts.
