Metro Atlanta Ambulance Service (MAAS) is among the first private EMS providers in the Southeast to launch a prehospital whole blood program—bringing transfusions directly to trauma scenes.

The program relies on the Delta APRU (Autonomous Portable Refrigeration Unit) to keep whole blood safely stored and ready for use in the field. With APRUs on advanced life support units, MAAS crews can initiate transfusions on-scene, delivering red cells, clotting factors, and volume when patients need it most.

Already, the system has saved lives—most recently when medics used blood carried in a Delta APRU to stabilize a stabbing victim in Smyrna before hospital arrival.

By pairing leading-edge care with reliable technology, MAAS is setting a new standard for prehospital trauma response.
