In a major step forward for emergency care in the Ozarks, TCAD Paramedics has launched Southwest Missouri’s first prehospital blood program. Crews are now carrying never-frozen plasma and packed red blood cells directly on their ambulances, allowing paramedics to begin lifesaving transfusions in the field — before patients ever reach the hospital. For trauma victims and those facing severe hemorrhage, those saved minutes can make the difference between life and death.

The program, which went live on June 1, is a partnership between TCAD and the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, the region’s sole blood products supplier. Together, they’ve built a supply chain designed to keep blood available, safe, and ready at a moment’s notice. As the Blood Center’s leadership noted, uncontrolled blood loss remains the leading cause of death in trauma patients, and bringing transfusion capability to the scene addresses that reality head-on.

Carrying blood on an ambulance is no small logistical feat. Blood products must be kept within a strict temperature range at all times, with documented monitoring to ensure every unit remains safe to administer. That’s where the Delta ICE 2L comes in — the smart blood cooler featured in photos from the program’s rollout. Built to hold two 500mL bags, the ICE 2L pairs a rugged, field-ready design with real-time temperature tracking and Bluetooth and cellular connectivity, alerting crews instantly to any temperature excursion.

The device stays cold for up to 48 hours on a rechargeable battery, records and displays internal temperature in real time, and shows remaining storage time right on its screen and in the companion app. For an agency taking on the responsibility of carrying blood into unpredictable field conditions, that combination of durability and continuous monitoring offers the confidence that each unit will be viable when a patient needs it most.

Since launch, TCAD paramedics have already put the program to work, administering blood products on two emergency calls — one trauma response and one serious medical emergency. It’s an early but powerful indication of what’s possible when proven technology and forward-thinking EMS leadership come together to bring the hospital’s capabilities to the roadside.
